Story Massage for Children

What is story massage?

Story massage involves the use of simple movements that can depict the words of a story. Tracing a large circle on a child’s back, for example, can represent the image of the world, while a gentle squeezing action on the shoulders can represent eating something very delicious.

When performing story massage, you concentrate on the shoulders, back, arms and head. These all areas that are easily accessible when fully clothed and non-intrusive. You don’t use oil and children don’t need to remove any clothes. It a lovely activity to do between siblings as well as between parent and child, or equally peer to peer within a classroom environment.

It is suitable for all ages, however it is best introduced to children aged between 18 months to 12 years. You can let the child choose their favourite story and create strokes and movements to go along side it. It’s also lovely to switch roles and for your child to use their imagination to create movements and strokes on you.

Benefits of Story Massage

The benefits of positive touch for children are backed by extensive research from The Massage in Schools Association and Touch Research Institute Miami with findings including:

  • Improved calmness and concentration
  • Increased self-confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem
  • Improved social skills
  • Increased engagement in activities
  • Better communication

There is also an educational element as it can be used to fit in with the national curriculum. Many children have learnt their numbers and letters, and elements of history, geography and nature through story massage.
